The Virginia Southpaws is a blues-influenced, American rock band from Northern Virginia consisting of Rich Russman (guitar, vocals), Mike Greenberg (guitar, vocals), and Jason Mattis (bass guitar). Rich and Mike have played together for over a decade up and down the East Coast in the power trio, The Jones.
In 2015, Russman and Greenberg collaborated on a new sound resulting in the release of their first self-titled album, The Virginia Southpaws, written, recorded and produced by the duo.
The band's raw roots-rock sound draws heavily from influences, such as the Black Crowes, The Drive by Truckers and Delta Blues greats like Robert Johnson and Skip James.
Collectively, the members of The Virginia Southpaws have performed at notable venues, such as The Knitting Factory in NYC, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, The Fillmore Silver Spring, The State Theatre in Virginia, the Rock & Roll Hotel in DC, and numerous music clubs across the Mid-Atlantic and NYC.
The members have played alongside major recording artists, including The Wailers, Eddie Money, Urge Overkill, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Answer, the Allman Bros, Buckwheat Zydeco, Hot Tuna, Corey Harris, Reignwolf, Hoots and Hellmouth, Taddy Porter, American Bang, The Parlor Mob, Matt Mays and El Torpedo, The Petticoat Tea Room, The Doughboys, The London Souls, The Record Company, and many others.
Lyrics:Blend into the shadows, fire smoking from my tongue I make flames that burn it down til it's all said and done Walkin' slow, my devil mind will block the morning sun Rip the sky, explode the stars and black out every one I'm a force to be reckoned with, I am the natural Law When the wind blows down the street then you will know my name I help the desert bleach bones white and keep the holy flame I make the ocean swallow ships and rivers flood their banks I'm the one that's stealing every teardrop from your face Maybe I will spare you baby but that just ain't my style Maybe I will love you baby but that just ain't worthwhile Maybe I'm born a killer, and maybe I'm born a saint. You might try to stop me but the ground won't let you fight My footsteps move in closer, make your stomach feelin' tight Lock your dorrs cause you'll be hidin' everything in sight I take it all and fade away, into the darkened night
